Who we are
About the desk
An independent review desk that grades dog-training courses on two report cards, and refuses to let a commission change a verdict.
Marker & Method is an independent review desk for online dog training. We read the research and judge every course on two things: whether it reflects how dogs actually learn and stays humane, and whether it is built so a real person can get results with their real dog. We earn commissions when readers buy through our links, and we never let that change a verdict.
The voice you are reading
We write as a single, consistent publication, in the first person plural. We sit at the intersection of two fields: applied animal behavior, and the design of adult learning. The first tells us whether a method is good for the dog. The second tells us whether a course is any good at teaching the human, which is the part almost everyone ignores.
We are honest about what our analysis rests on. We judge the curriculum and materials, the creator's public teaching and track record, how well the method aligns with the evidence, and publicly available learner feedback. We do not stage personal tests, and we do not invent stories about training a particular dog. Our authority is analytical, not anecdotal. We think that is both more honest and more useful than a single owner's single dog.
What we are not
We are not a hype affiliate site, a force-free pulpit, or a tool-first macho brand. We have a point of view, the evidence supports reward-first, humane training, but we hold it without caricaturing the people we disagree with. Many balanced trainers are skilled and care deeply about dogs. We argue with methods, using evidence, never with people, using insults.
The promises we hold to
- The rubric decides the verdict, and the affiliate link follows it. Never the reverse. If our genuine pick is one we cannot link, we say so.
- Every claim about methods traces to evidence. Where something is opinion or inference, we frame it that way.
- We tell you when not to buy. Some problems need a professional in the room. Saying so costs us a sale every time, and we keep saying it.
- We disclose the money plainly on every page that carries a link.
How to read us
Start with the science of dog training, which is the foundation everything else references. Then see how we grade to understand the two scores at the top of every review. If you ever wonder whether a verdict was shaded by a commission, our disclosure explains exactly how the money works, and why it does not.
